Pupil Premium
The Government believes that the Pupil Premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals (FSM) and their peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most.
The Pupil Premium is allocated to children from families who are currently known to be eligible for FSM in both mainstream and non-mainstream settings and children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months.
The Government decided that eligibility for the Pupil Premium in 2012-13 be extended to pupils who have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) at any point in the last 6 years. From April 2015, nurseries, preschools and childminders can also claim extra funding (called Early Years Pupil Premium or EYPP).
The level of the premium for 2024 to 2025 financial year is £1480 for eligible children.
From September 2012, the Government has required schools to publish online information about how they have used the Pupil Premium. Our latest report Pupil Premium Grant Expenditure is provided at the bottom of this page.
